Ted J. Clarke, M.D.

Dr. Ted Clarke was named COPIC’s Chairman and CEO in 2005 and has served on its Board of Directors since March 2002. Prior to joining COPIC, he spent nearly 20 years as an orthopaedic surgeon and partner with Western Orthopaedics, a medical practice based in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Clarke leads COPIC in its mission to improve medicine in the communities it serves. He is at the forefront of external relations with physicians, hospital executives, legislators and the business community—highlighting COPIC’s role as a leader in health care and reinforcing the company’s focus on patient safety and risk management. Dr. Clarke also works closely with physician leaders who serve on COPIC’s Board of Directors and as faculty consultants. In addition, he is actively involved with the COPIC Medical Foundation, which has provided more than $5 million in grant funding since 1992 for initiatives that improve patient safety and quality of care.

Dr. Clarke has served on the Physician Insurers Association of America’s (PIAA) Board of Directors since May 2006 and is a former Chair of the Board. In 2016, he received the PIAA Award of Excellence in Honor of Peter Sweetland. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and has presented symposiums on medical liability issues for almost 10 years. Dr. Clarke also served on the board of directors for Colorado Concern, The Colorado Health Foundation, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Committee, and the Colorado Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Clarke is a nationally recognized expert on medical liability issues and has authored several articles for medical publications and journals. He currently writes a column that is featured in each issue of Colorado Medicine magazine and his article “Avoiding a Lawsuit: Lessons from the Never-Sued” was published in AAOS Now magazine in October 2011. He authored chapters in the recently published books, Case Studies in Patient Safety and Patient Safety in Surgery. Since 2009, Dr. Clarke has served on the editorial board for Patient Safety in Surgery—an open access, online journal.

A Colorado native, Dr. Clarke earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado and completed his residency in orthopaedics at North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest University. He provides medical services at Denver Health’s orthopaedic clinic and was presented with its Volunteer of the Year award in 2011. In addition, Dr. Clarke has taught communication courses for the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine and served as an advisor for developing new curriculum. In 2016, he received the Florence Rena Sabin Award, which is given to alumni of the School of Medicine, in recognition of his contributions to health care.
