Patient Safety and Risk Management

COPIC continues to take an innovative approach toward patient safety and risk management by investing in professional resources, staff that provide experienced guidance and leadership, and programs with proven results. We are active participants in state and national initiatives aimed at improving patient safety and transfer this knowledge directly to health care professionals, facilities and hospitals in our communities. And with more than 25 years of claims experience, COPIC is able to draw upon its expertise in liability exposure and teach practical techniques for managing and reducing risk.

The common goal in all of these efforts is to reduce patient harm, your liability risk, and provide you with effective tools to enhance the quality of your practice, and maintain reasonable premium rates so that everyone—from doctors to hospitals to patients—benefit with improved health care.​

3Rs Program (Recognize, Respond and Resolve)

We facilitate candid, early communication between physicians and patients to preserve the relationship when unexpected outcomes occur. COPIC's 3Rs Program was recognized by the New England Journal of Medicine as part of the national transformation in how health care providers communicate with patients about unexpected outcomes.

COPIC Points Program

COPIC-insured physicians can earn a discount on annual premiums as a reward for adhering to risk management guidelines and continuing to expand their risk management knowledge by participating in education opportunities. This program applies to those covered under PLI and MPL policies.

Practice Quality Site Visits

COPIC performs more than 2,000 site visits and patient record reviews annually to assist you in achieving better results for risk management procedures and quality improvement processes. Our registered nurses conduct office assessments to ensure that adequate office systems and medical records are in place for effective patient care.

Hospital and Facility Services

COPIC facility risk managers provide value-added services to the acute care and ambulatory facilities. These services include: consultation, on-site education, safety and risk assessments, provision of resources and reference materials.

Residency and Medical Student Evaluation

Each year, COPIC hosts more than 150 residents and physicians-in-training in week-long rotations. Residents have the opportunity to meet with physicians, nurses, attorneys, and other COPIC employees about medical-legal issues. They also review closed claims, participate in discussions related to the claims process, review literature, and attend Claims Committee meetings.

Physician Support Services

COPIC recognizes that physicians and health care providers may at times suffer personal, emotional or physical impairments as a result of life circumstances or the process of litigation. We provide Lawsuit Stress Support Sessions and work closely with the Colorado Physician Health Program and the Center for Personalized Education for Physicians to present seminars and educational programs.
